The British University in Egypt (BUE)

Degrees Validation

By Loughborough University

BUE graduates will receive two degree certificates:
one from Egypt and the second from the UK,
at the same time

The BUE will graduate its first cohort in summer 2009

Loughborough University formal agreement to validate the existing undergraduate degree programmes at the British University in Egypt (BUE) is a ground breaking initiative.

The agreement provides a British style education and will produce graduates who are attractive to major Egyptian, UK and international employers.  It also aims to build a strong research community, which will contribute to international research priorities, address issues relevant to the Egyptian economy, and help to ensure that the (BUE) attains worldwide recognition.

This agreement is part of a wider Loughborough:BUE partnership arrangement. Loughborough University will validate 16 degree programmes offered by the (BUE), covering the areas of Engineering, Business Studies, Economics, Political Science, Informatics and Computer Sciences.

Students graduating from the (BUE), who satisfy the regulatory requirements, will receive a degree certificate from the British University in Egypt (BUE) fully accredited by the Supreme Council of Egyptian Universities, hence in Egypt and the Arab region, and another degree certificate from Loughborough University, at the same time.

In order to ensure a British style of education, the BUE appoints and is constantly seeking to appoint internationally recognised research-active academic staff, a high proportion of whom originate from and/or have experience of UK higher education.

HM ex-Ambassador to Egypt Sir Derek Plumbly praised the cooperation between the two institutions as it will open opportunities for students.  He cited the presence of many British renowned corporations operating in Egypt.  This will enhance students’ employability and promote further cooperation between the two academic institutions.

Professor Shirley Pearce CBE, Vice Chancellor Loughborough University, said: The British University in Egypt has achieved much in its short lifetime.  It represents an unprecedented extension of British education in the Middle East, and Loughborough is pleased to be working with partner organisations in both the UK and Egypt on such a pioneering project.  We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership with the BUE.”

Professor Ahmed Hamza, BUE President, emphasises that BUE focuses on offering degree programmes relevant to job market needs and that the university maintains continuous dialogue with top executives in major corporations to ensure that these needs are well identified and met accordingly.  Accordingly, significant job opportunities await the BUE graduates as a result of major partnerships with renowned British, international and Egyptian organisations.

BUE UK Advisor Professor Ron McCaffer said, “Much more important than the relationship between universities is the one between companies, industry and higher education institutions”.  He continued by saying that graduates should be “fit” for a purpose-employment.  Traditional subjects as well as new ones, should be relevant.  Loughborough does this by working closely with companies who sponsor students through their course.  The day students start university is the day they start working for the company.

Nick McHard, Registrar and Director of Corporate Services at the BUE, said “Although the (BUE) has its own degree-awarding powers, validation by one of the leading higher education institutions in the UK will be fundamental to building the (BUE’s) reputation, marketing its programmes and strengthening its recruitment.”

It is worth noting that the (BUE) is a non-profit making university, situated at El-Sherouk city, 30km from the centre of Cairo, on a site of approximately 50 acres.

From a historical standpoint, in 1998, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and President Hosni Mubarak agreed in principle to the founding of the British University in Egypt (BUE). In September 2005, the British University in Egypt (BUE) opened its doors to students.  In June 2006, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Loughborough University and the British University in Egypt establishing the platform for a broad collaborative partnership envisaged in research, teaching, enterprise, and students’ and professors’ exchange. Finally, in September 2007, the British University in Egypt has received full validation. This demonstrates the rapid and constant progressive advancement of the British University in Egypt, reflecting on its current and future academic progress.

The BUE was formally opened on 22 March 2006 in the presence of The First Lady of The Arab Republic of Egypt and Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.
